3rd Time is not a charm.

After having two good races in past weekends, I was all geared up and excited for the 10K today. I knew the course would be long gradual hills both up and down but felt confident in my ability to run between 41 and 41:30 1oK time.

The night before it was thundering, lighting and ultimately raining which did not bode well for a non humid race. Nevertheless I still felt good (ah the tricks we play on ourselves!).

Race time it was 83 degrees and already 95% humidity at 8 am. After we all whined and bitched at Ron the weather guy (he works for the government as a meteroligist) we did the race. First half the race went right on plan. Hit the 5K mark at 20:15 and felt good. Then it fell apart at mile 4. I had an asthma attack, the heat and humidity took its toll and the chest tightened up and I was forced to slow down. Bottom line was the 2nd 5K was a dissapointing 22:35.

Overall out of the 103 runners on the 10K I was 13th and 1st in Age group. Times were a bit slower for everyone as this was the first of the summer races with both heat and humidity.

I look forward to my 17 mile run tomorrow and ignore the off time I had. Next race is in June in Seattle with my son, son in law, a fellow roads scholar and fellow blogger No Try. We invited another blogger to join us but she decided to flee the state and go rafting rather than race us!

Weekend Plans:

I have 3 days off and plan the following activities: Saturday have a 10K race on a rolling hilly (not real hilly more gradual ups and downs) where it is likely to be warm and humid. Plan is to shoot for a 41 min or so 10K time. Feel strong and rested, just ran 12.5 miles this week so far.

Sunday I plan on doing a relaxing 17 or so mile run and enjoy the weather. Sunday night my youngest has a musical producation at the arts theater that should have 400-500 people attend. It should be fun!

Monday off to the beach for some rest and fun. I so enjoy the beach and we have great beaches here in NC.

Another succesful 5K speedwork!

Today I did run a 5K (well 3.16 miles it was long and two GPS devices confirmed it). Started the day off with a 1 mile fun run with the youngest critter and enjoyed that a ton again! Her time was 14:40 and an improvement over last year.

The race offered both a 5 and 10K and I was undecided what one to do when Ian and Jeff showed up and said they were doing the 5K. That was enough for me to make the decision to run the 5K.

It was cool and wet and a new course with a lot of twists in it especially at mile 2. Split times were 6:02 (mile 1) 6:30 (mile 2 and a lot of turns) 7:01 (final 1.16 mile). Final time was 19:33 and if the course was accurate I might have set a new masters PR.

Ian, Todd, myself and another guy we all ran together the whole way until the last quarter mile. Then we all kicked and for the first time in a while I was totally outkicked. The unknown guy finished 1st (he was in the 20-29 age group), Todd finished 2nd by 2 seconds ahead of me and I beat Ian by 3 seconds. In the end it was a good race, 3rd overall and 1st in age group.

I feel like I am getting prepared again for the 10K next week. I am targetting a sub 41 on a difficult course next week.

Today I ran a last minute 5K here in town. I ran this race a few years ago and didn't particularly like the way it was organized but was talked into by Ian who said he would kick my tush at the race! So with that in mind I took my daughter and we did the 1 mile fun run together (it was closer to a half a mile though they forgot a turn).

After that I did the 5K. Splits were 6:08, 6:10 and 7 min even for last 1.1 miles for a total time of 19:18. Finished 14th overall 1st in age group (M45-49). Overall pretty pleased with the more even splits but wished I had kicked it up a bit in the end. Still much better results than I have been having and finally feel back to where I was before the Jeep Challenge. I just need to knock of another 19 seconds before mid June (hint for blog mate Tammy I found the race for the Kure 5K in Seattle when I am out there)

And yes I did beat Ian by 14 seconds!

Highlight of the race was running with my daughter though. Given everything that has happened with my bosses son (horrible accident) it makes me cherish my time with my youngest even more.

Here is my Las Vegas Marathon Training schedule. I will tweak it here and there and add more miles probably in the beginning but it more or less is the plan I intend on following. Hopefully our fellow blogger, Running Rabbit, will now publish her training schedule for her marathon! I am a big believer in having a training schedule and measuring yourself against it. The trick for me is the speed work. It is easier to do it with others.

Upsetting news

Last night the owners of the company called and let me know that their 7 yr old son had been hit by a car while riding his bike. Their son did not have a helmet on and is in critical condition with severe swelling in the head along with some other broken bones. He is in a medically induced coma being supported by a venilator.

Sometimes we need to keep things in perspective. Some of you know my oldest son is severally mentally retarded who has had numerous surgeries and while I have had 20 years to deal with it, it will be painful to watch others go through the anguish of watching their child suffer.

Lets keep our prayers for those who really need it.

I had a decent weekend running wise. Saturday the group run went well with 3 of us in the faster group doing 5.5 miles of hills at a moderate pace. Humidity was setting so it was a good workout and preparation for the summer races.

The main group met shortly after that and we had a new member join us. My friend Tracy now has new competition as the new gal is an officer in the USMC (ah just like I use to be!). The new gal is fast and is looking to break 1:30:00 on the half so she will be pushing me all running season.

Always nice to have new members join and who love to run with our road runner club!

Sunday I did my normal run alone and ran an easy 9 miles. Week total was 43.6 miles so starting to build back up to my normal distances. Need to push back to some 50+ weeks again.

Running recovery is underway!

I have had a few good runs lately including last Saturday where I did 10 miles with my running buddy Tracy. She and I ran an easy 8 miles at an 8 min per mile pace and then decided to do some speed work. We kicked into my 5K pace and sped up to 6 min/mile until she dropped back and then I slowed down to let her recover. We did that for the remaining 2 miles and made it into a very hard 10 mile work out.

Sunday I ran a easy 8 miles at a 7:45 pace and just enjoyed the day running.

Today I woke up did my 4.5 miles this morning and heading out tonight for another 4.5 miles.

Hopefully the recovery from the past race and lack of sleep is underway.

Next big race is at the end of May and I will probably find a 5K to push a sub 19:30 and gather my speed back before the 10K.
